Between One Day and the Next 2007 2 panels: 132 x 82cm and 130 x 72cm
Acrylic on Birch Ply
This painting is inspired by movement in an architectural setting.
The colour and shape of the panels relate to the chosen interior, where the large white section in the right hand panel refers to a bed. This transitional characteristic (sleeping/waking) naturally divides the room into two sections – the open active space to the left and the balanced, rested area to the right. To emphasise this, the work is split into two panels, which may also be taken as a metaphor for two days with the link between them being a period of sleep.
Actions are registered by drilled holes of various diameters. Areas of greater activity are stressed through larger diameter holes and clusters, occasionally joining to reveal the wall behind. The drilled holes also serve to stress the material nature of the wood which is emphasised by the split between the two panels which makes a soft shadowy line across the work.
The principal character of the work is its colour. The unbroken white of the right hand section articulates the wall and contrasts with the expanse of brown/grey.
