Action Through Time 2006

83 x 122cm

Acrylic on birch ply

This painting is the first of a series of works inspired by movement in an architectural setting.

The principal element is a field of colour related to a chosen interior. This is adjusted through the fixing of particular points that represent the movement of people within the space. Taken together, they indicate a recording of actions and tasks through time.

The points are fixed by drilled holes. Drilling makes an irreversible mark/incision and its finality is an indication of a distinct decision. In certain areas the proximity of the drilled holes leads to clusters, which, in some cases, have resulted in parts of the surface breaking away entirely.

The smallest holes appear as black dots, but as they increase in size, the light penetrates and the holes become paler, eventually becoming brilliant white, as they expose the wall behind.
