Garden Islands 2009/10

max. dimensions 112 x 297cm

Four panel painting in oil and pigmented epoxy resin.

This four part painting is the largest of the present series, at nearly three metres long. Its inspiration is the concourse in front of a new modular railway station. This consists of a series of roads and parking areas divided by small plots of shrubbery. The ‘gaps’ between these guide the traffic towards, around and away from the main entrance. The overall impression is of an architect’s model scaled up to fit real life.

This painting focuses on the relationship between the designers’ static graph paper geometry and the dynamic action of the concourse. Each of the ‘garden islands’ is an amalgam of octagons and hexagons lifted from an imaginary grid. Between these, the dramatic perspective of the main through road curves upward towards the top right of the ensemble.
